CBSE exams to test students for values

CHENNAI: From this academic year, the Central Board of Secondary Education exam will not just tell students whether they are eligible for higher studies. It will also test them if they are fit to live in the society. In the Class 10 and 12 board exams 5% of marks in each of the core subjects will be allotted for value education. The idea is to prepare students to live in a multilingual, multicultural and multi-religious country.

The CBSE has decided to follow an interdisciplinary approach where values are intermingled with the content of all major subjects. "It has been felt that our educational ecosystem needs to be further strengthened to deliver values enshrined in the Constitution. Curricula cutting across all subjects need to articulate values in explicit terms and the assessment schemes must reciprocate by assigning a weighting to value-based items," CBSE joint director Ram Shankar said in a letter.

In each subject, 5% weightage will be given at the summative assessment level or board exam to answers to value education questions integrated with the content. The questions will be for five marks in a 100-marks paper and 3-4 marks in a paper of 70-90 marks. A potential question in economics is: a father in his will gives 40% each to his son and daughter and 20% to his servant who has been with him for long. Why has he done it and what is the value addition?8 Answer: Gender equality and charity.

While the questions would be included in the Class 10 and 12 boards, schools have been asked to select relevant questions from a question bank prepared by the board to include in end-of-term exams for Classes 9 and 11. These questions will be asked in the final exam paper of every major subject.

School heads welcomed the move. "We have been evaluating students on their values in the formative assessments, but this move will send out the message that it is as important to learn values and ethics as it is to learn subject matter," said Chennai CBSE Sahodaya School Complex chairperson Margrette David Raj.

Touts camp near colleges as admissions begin in Noida

The race to get admission in various management and technical colleges in Noida and Greater Noida has begun. Students, who had appeared in the Uttar Pradesh State Entrance Examination (UPSEE), on April

22 are now trying to secure a seat in government and private colleges in courses such as BTech,
  MBA, BPharm, BArch, etc.

But the admission season has spelled a boom in business for touts. Touts, posing as college students, camp near the campus to ensnare students who have not scored well and are doubtful if they will be able to get through the university cut-offs. According to university officials, touts posing as 'agents' offer seats to students.

"People in swanky cars came to the university and told us that they could expedite the admission process, irrespective of whether our names figured on the cut-off list or not. They asked for our certificates and copies of the admission forms and a 'security deposit'," said Amit Verma, a B.Tech aspirant.

Over the years, Noida and Greater Noida have become hubs of engineering and management institutes affiliated either to Mahamaya Technical University (MTU) or Gautam Buddha Technical University (GBTU). There are 408 colleges affiliated to MTU and 307 to GBTU. While MTU has a campus in Noida, GBTU operates from Lucknow.

“Colleges have started charging extra fee from this season. Earlier, one needed to pay R5 lakh donation to secure a B.Tech seat, but now it comes at nothing less than Rs. 7 lakh. Of this, 25% is our share. To escape the scrutiny, the transaction is carried out secretively,” said a tout.

Knowledge Park in Greater Noida has around 87 technical colleges and is a heaven for touts, who are trying to make money during the admission season.

According to sources, the admission fee in engineering colleges is between Rs. 2 lakh and Rs. 7 lakh, and for management courses it can go up to Rs. 10 lakh.

"The colleges cannot give admission to a student on their own. There is a procedure that all colleges have to follow. The university will fill the seats through the counselling process," said an official from MTU, requesting not to be named.

However, the university officials have warned students to not to fall in such traps and follow the admission guidelines.

“Students should keep following the university's website. We are regularly updating admission information on it. They should either download the form, or come to the campus to collect it. There should be no other way to get admission," said Prof SK Kak, vice-chancellor, MTU.

B.Tech course in computer science, information technology and electronics and communication is in demand. The admission fee varies from college to college, with the minimum pegged at Rs. 3-4 lakh per course.

1.4 lakh apply for Delhi University admissions

NEW DELHI: The number of applications received by the Delhi University this year has crossed 1.4 lakh, of which 43,000 came online, an officials said on Monday, on the last day for receiving applications for the 2012-13 session.

In all, we received 1,03,500 offline applications and 43,300 came online," the dean for student welfare, JM Khurana told IANS. The admission counters closed at 4pm Monday.

The last day rush meant that the counters for receiving forms at the university's north and south campuses, which had opened half an hour earlier at 9.30am and were scheduled to close by 1pm stayed open till 4pm.

"Originally, we had planned to keep them open till 1pm while the application forms could be submitted at 12 designated post offices around the city till 4pm, so anyone running late would still be able to submit forms," deputy dean for student welfare, Gurpreet Singh Tuteja said.

The online submission of forms stopped one hour later at 5pm on Monday.

However, these alternative methods hold no charm for the applicants who stood in long queues at the university counters. Compared to the applicants in the campus, there were hardly any aspirants at head post office Lodhi road, one of the designated post offices where forms could be submitted.

Incredibly, some of the applicants didn't even know that Monday was the last day for submission of application forms. Others recounted various reasons for turning up at the last moment.

"I was busy with various coaching classes and tests earlier, so I kept on pushing the submission till now," claimed Roshan, an admission seeker from south Delhi's Saket area.

Nearly 54,000 seats are up for grabs in around 70 colleges affiliated to Delhi University. An estimated 125,000 students had applied for various courses in the university last year.

Utkal University banks on own entrance exam

BHUBANESWAR: In a last moment change,Utkal University has decided to conduct its own entrance test for admission into its MBA andMCA courses instead of taking students through Odisha Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE) leaving OJEE qualifiers a dejected lot.
The OJEE brochure 2012-13 mentioned Utkal University in the list of government institutions offering MBA/MCA courses and where admission would be based on OJEE results. However, long after students cleared the OJEE examination, result of which was published on May 30, the university has done a U-turn by taking out advertisements last week to conduct its own entrance for these courses. OJEE counseling for these courses would begin this week.
"I was under the impression that I can easily get a seat in Utkal University MCA. That was precisely the reason I appeared for the OJEE. OJEE and Utkal authorities should have had better coordination to avoid such a confusion," said a student. Utkal's MBA and MCA programmes with 30 seats each are among the most sought after in the OJEE list of institutions for these two courses.
OJEE authorities said they were not aware that Utkal would not draw students from OJEE pool. "While advertising for OJEE or during conducting the entrance, we had no idea that the varsity will not take students from OJEE pool. Only recently, they have conveyed us the decision," saidOJEE secretary Priyabrata Sahoo. Till last year Utkal University was taking students through OJEE for these courses.
But Utkal University authorities said they had intimated OJEE about the change well in time. "We had written a letter to OJEE well in time that we will conduct our own entrance examination. Recently, when we discovered that the OJEE has misplaced the letter, we have written again," said varsity's PG council chairman Prof P K Mishra.
Mishra said the varsity took the decision for its own entrance to get better students by giving certain weightage to career. "We saw that for departments where we conduct our own entrance, the lot of students coming are better, resulting in better job recruitment at the end of the courses. However, for MBA and MCA, campus placements were on the decline," he said.
As per its advertisements, Utkal will select students for these two master degrees by giving weightage to career marks, entrance test, group discussion and personal interview.
